Mary came into our room and Amy and I looked at each other.
Mary wasn't a good roommate. Over the first two weeks, we walked in on her in lingerie or not having clothes on at all. And that was with friends.
Mary had a boyfriend in England, and they had video sex. All the time. It was bad. Amy and I had tried to deal with it on our own and Mary now changed in the bathroom. And, Carter had the brilliant idea of putting a magnet that said “Do It!” on the outside of the door when she was “busy”. Why couldn’t I have thought of that?
Though that wasn't the worst of our roommate issues. This one was serious. One day Amy and I talked about our suspicions. I had seen bloodied gauze in the trash, and Amy had seen scars on Mary's legs, and we put two and two together.
Mary had a self-harm problem. Or she claimed she had one when we confronted her. She denied having done anything while she had been in college. Still, we talked to our RA about it, and the school counseling service contacted Mary.
I think Mary was upset at us, but we did what was right. Mary improved in the next couple weeks. She started leaving the dorm, and seemed a bit better.
So if you have roommate issues, your RA can be of great help. It can be intimidating, but your RA is there to help, whether you get locked out of your room or are fighting with your roommate. So if there's a problem, speak up.
