“She likes him. He likes her. Everyone knows. Except them.”
Who knew that a relationship could start by trying to find a guy to help you move your refrigerator into your new room?
Well girls, if you are single, keep your mind open to all the possibilities! You can find that perfect guy when you least expect it, which was exactly what happened to me.
When my new roommates helped me move my stuff out, I also needed to move my fridge which was heavy, and they had other things to do. Debra lived on the first floor and decided to hang out with me and try to help me find a guy who could move my fridge.
Giving up after an hour, Debra said, “Where are the guys when you need them?”
Laughing, “I’ll text every guy I know.”
Sadly every guy I knew was busy. We tried asking every guy who passed by our hall, but no luck. Ready to give up, Debra and I were going to head to town to eat.
Walking out of the building and about to cross the street Debra spotted a mutual friend, “Hey, she has a boy with her, let’s ask him to move your fridge.”
“Okay,” I said shyly, as we headed over.
“Hey guys, what are you two up to?” Felicity asked.
“Well, we were trying to move a fridge, but couldn’t find any guys. But you’re a guy, wanna maybe move a fridge for us?” Debra asked.
“Sure,” the guy said shrugging his shoulders.
“I’m Debra.”
“And I’m Anna,” I introduced.
“Ethan,” he said quietly.
Ethan. What could I say; he was cute. He had short brownish blonde hair, and deep brown eyes that penetrated you when you looked at him. He was a bit taller than I, quite lean, and very shy.
Heading back to my room, Felicity and Ethan grabbed my fridge and got it in the elevator. I ran up the stairs and got my new rooms door open so they could get it in. Debra came first out of the elevator followed by them carrying the fridge with what seemed like ease.
Once it was in the room and hooked up we all went back down to Ethan’s room. Felicity announced she had to go do work when we offered for them to join us in going to dinner.
“What about you?” Debra asked Ethan.
“I can go to dinner, but then I have to go to a movie for film class, but you guys are welcome to join,” Ethan offered.
I smiled and we headed out the door as Ethan grabbed his wallet off his desk. We walked downtown, and Ethan and Debra seemed to be hitting it off. I walked ahead of them so they could talk. I was stuck in my head anyways.
Arriving in downtown we went to Panera Bread. We all ordered and sat down. Ethan started talking about stuff that Carter and I had talked about once. So Ethan was intellectual… note taken. I jumped into the conversation.
Turned out Ethan and I were both writers, he was into film, and I was into photography, and we both liked talking about the meaningful things in life. He wrote this whole thing about the friend zone and about love. It was brilliant. I could feel it. Myself liking him. Damn. Just ignore it, push it aside. It isn’t an option. That's what I told myself, not wanting to get hurt again after Carter.
“So we should get going to the movies, that is if you guys want to come,” Ethan said.
“I can’t go…have too much work,” Debra said.
“What? Why? You really can’t?” I asked disappointedly.
What was Debra thinking? She and Ethan hit it off, why was she leaving? Ethan didn’t seem too bothered by her announcement. I looked at Debra and she said goodbye, leaving Ethan and I alone. Fuck. What the hell was I supposed to do now? I thought.
Ethan and I walked over to the theatre, which was only two blocks from where we were. I asked what movie we were going to see and he replied, “Chinatown.”
Arriving at the theatre we ran into one of his friends from film. We all sat down and the movie began. It was an old movie, and I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it. But after about twenty minutes passed I found myself enjoying the film. Though, Ethan was texting a lot during the movie, which kind of annoyed me. At the end Ethan and I walked home and exchanged numbers and talked about hanging out again.
That was the beginning of a great friendship.
There's much more to this story, but in time I'll tell you more about Ethan. I have to save some of the good stuff for later!
XOXO Anna
